This is an ideal course for community-minded individuals with an interest in making a difference in the community. It will students develop broad skills and knowledge in public health, while developing specialised expertise in health promotion and environmental health. Students will be prepared for a diverse career in emerging public health para-professions. Public health refers to a collection of disciplines that share a common aim to prevent disease, promote health and improve wellbeing among the population as a whole, rather than focusing on individuals. The major in health promotion covers topics such as drugs in society, health promotion concepts, healthy lifestyles, and community assets and needs assessment. The environmental health major focuses learning on microbiology, food safety, environmental toxicology, environmental health law and modern environmental issues. Students have the option to continue their studies and complete CQU’s Bachelor of Public Health (Specialisation), allowing them to further enhance their future career prospects. Students enrolled in the unit HLTH12031 spend 25 hours volunteering in the community. The content and assessment are highly reflective, with the aim being to help students build an understanding of a salutary approach to health.
