Course outline

This is a two-year teacher preparation program for students who already hold a tertiary degree and who aspire to become teachers. This course offers practical, school-based learning and draws on the latest research into effective teaching methods, ensuring graduates are well equipped to meet the challenges of a teaching career. Students learn to cooperatively and critically plan, design, implement and review relevant teaching programs, including developing teaching and learning strategies and curriculum materials within two specialist areas. This course develops knowledge and skills, and the application of knowledge and skills required at masters level in education. Study subjects that address educational theories and discipline specific curriculum and pedagogical studies, and build skills to independently research and apply established theories to educational practice. Other requirements

A Blue Card is required; refer to institution. Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program are required to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate and must pass the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA).

Additional entry requirements

Applicants must have successfully completed an approved bachelor’s degree in a discipline other than Education from a recognised tertiary institution with cumulative GPA of 4.5 or higher. Teaching area study requirements means at least one year of full time (or equivalent) study in areas relevant to one or more learning areas of the primary school curriculum in Australian schools must be completed. Learning areas of the primary school curriculum may include: the arts; English; geography; health and physical education; history; information and communication technology (ICT); mathematics; science.
