Course outline

Complete two degrees and gain a teaching qualification underpinned by strong disciplinary knowledge in classroom music and choral or instrumental music. The course is tailored specifically for students who want to pursue a career in music education. It offers two years of intensive training in a chosen instrument (including voice) and three years of combined music and education courses. Graduates are prepared for the variety of teaching expected of music teachers throughout primary and secondary schools. Other requirements

A Blue Card is required; refer to institution. Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program are required to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate, and must pass the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA).

Prerequisites

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, C); Teaching Personal Statement; Audition

Fixed closing date

All applications for audition must be received by the School of Music by 21 August 2023. QTAC applications for this program close 30 September 2023.

Most offers will be made for Bachelor of Music (Hons) in the 21 December 2023 offer round, however for music dual degrees (Bachelor of Music (Hons)/Bachelor of Education (Secondary), the offer round is 11 January 2024. Career opportunities

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT), as well as other authorities, to teach in schools around Australia, and some worldwide. Once registered, graduates can work as a secondary or primary school music teacher in state or independent schools in Queensland, interstate or overseas, or undertake further study to qualify as a principal, mentor, curriculum adviser, or a guidance or career officer or head of department. Other career opportunities outside schooling include trainer for industry or business where knowledge of teaching skills and processes is in demand.
