Course outline

This is a two-year teacher preparation program for students who already hold a tertiary degree and who aspire to become teachers. This course offers practical, school-based learning and draws on the latest research into effective teaching methods, ensuring graduates are well equipped to meet the challenges of a teaching career. You learn to cooperatively and critically plan, design, implement and review relevant teaching programs, including developing teaching and learning strategies and curriculum materials within your two specialist areas. This course develops knowledge and skills, and the application of knowledge and skills required at masters level in education. You study subjects that address educational theories and discipline specific curriculum and pedagogical studies, and build skills to independently research and apply established theories to educational practice. Other requirements

A Blue Card is required; refer to institution. Students undertaking an Initial Teacher Education (ITE) program are required to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate and must pass the Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA).

Additional entry requirements

Applicants must have completed an appropriate bachelor’s degree in a different discipline from a recognised tertiary institution with a cumulative GPA of 4.5 or higher. Students must have completed sufficient studies to provide content knowledge for at least two nominated teaching areas. For information regarding the Teaching Personal Statement, refer to QTAC website. With regards to teaching areas, prior studies should support a specialisation in up to three of the following teaching areas: biology; business; chemistry; Chinese; drama; earth and environmental science; economics; English; film, TV and the new media; French; geography; German; history (ancient and modern); Japanese; legal studies; mathematics; mathematics – advanced; music; music – choral and instrumental; psychology; physics; Spanish. Applicants must nominate their preferred teaching areas (maximum of three) on their QTAC application.
