Course outline

This course prepares graduates for a career in teaching and related fields. It examines learners and learning theories, curriculum studies and approaches to teaching and assessment. It includes professional experience commencing in year one of the course. Students undertake practical work in schools and a variety of other educational sites in rural and remote locations as well as wider community settings. The course has a special focus on education for sustainability and improving outcomes for Indigenous students. It prepares teachers to work with adolescents from ages 13 to 18, with emphasis on teaching Years 7 to 12. Graduates typically teach across two key learning areas to Year 10 and specialise in one discipline to Year 12. This course is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Note

All education students must participate in a three-day intensive Professional Orientation Program in the final year of their program. Not all teaching areas are available at Cairns.

Other requirements

A Queensland Working with Children Card (Blue Card) is required; refer to institution. All students must meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) standard prior to their final placement and Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA).Refer to Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students. Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the minimum English language requirements; refer to institution.

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, C); Completion of Year 12 or attained age 18 years; LANTITE Literacy status; LANTITE Numeracy status; Teaching Personal Statement

Additional entry requirements

Students considering teaching chemistry must have Chemistry (Units 3 and 4, C). Students considering teaching maths or physics must have Mathematical Methods (Units 3 and 4, C).
Students considering teaching Industrial Technologies and Design must have a Certificate III in Engineering (Mechanical, Fabrication, Toolmaking, or related areas) or Certificate III in Carpentry, Joinery, or related areas; plus three years recent and relevant post-training industry experience. Students considering teaching Food Technologies and Design must have a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery; plus three years recent and relevant post-training industry experience.
All applicants must satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria. QTAC assesses applicants’ non-academic capabilities.
