Course outline

This course is suitable for those looking to work in mental health in the specialised field of drug and alcohol services. Students develop the skills required to provide support and interventions to people with alcohol and drug issues, respond appropriately to issues of domestic violence and intoxication, and assess and promote social, physical, emotional and mental health and wellbeing. Students also learn to advocate on behalf of people with complex coexisting mental health, drug, and alcohol issues.

Combined diploma/degrees

The Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs/Diploma of Mental Health can be combined with other programs as listed below to attain the awards of Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs/Diploma of Mental Health from TAFE Queensland and the relevant degree from the university. Students undertake initial study at TAFE Queensland and complete the degree at the relevant university. Duration, location, mode of study, semester intakes, electives and specialisations may vary. All mandatory university admission and English language requirements must be met before university enrolment is finalised. For more information contact the relevant university. Note: TAFE Queensland students making a transition to the degree may need to wait six months to start with the semester 1 university intake.

To apply for a combined diploma/degree, applicants must select the Diploma of Alcohol and Other Drugs/Diploma of Mental Health for the relevant TAFE Queensland location on their application and then nominate their preferred degree/university (one only). Applicants can list the stand alone diploma or the combined program but not both. Listing more than one is not needed because they have the same eligibility and OP/rank requirements.
