Course outline

In this 4 year program, students will gain an understanding of how nutrition impacts health and helps prevent and treat conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, obesity, malnutrition, gut disorders and allergies and intolerances. Students will develop the practical skills to guide people in making food choices that promote health and wellbeing by undertaking approximately 850 hours of supervised practice in hospitals, community centres, aged care facilities, the food industry and other organisations.
On campus, students will gain practical, hands-on experience in UQ’s modern dietetics demonstration space. In the student-led clinic students will practice applying medical nutrition therapy theory with real clients, as well as help design and deliver various nutrition education opportunities. For students who are interested in research, they can pursue this in the final year and complete an innovative project alongside leading Australian researchers in nutrition and dietetics, with national and international impact. Students also have the potential to contribute to published scientific literature.

Note

The undergraduate component is delivered at St Lucia and must be completed before advancing to the postgraduate component. The master’s degree is delivered with a combination of lectures at St Lucia and placements at healthcare facilities and must be completed on a full-time basis.
