Course outline

This course will prepare students for a rewarding and diverse career as a competent and effective Registered Nurse (Division 1) General. It is open to applicants who have completed a Diploma of Nursing (study package versions HLT51612, HLT54115 or HLT54121) within the last seven years and have current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration as an Enrolled Nursing (Division 2). Clinical learning is a key element of this course and students will be required to undertake 680 hours of professional experience placement in a variety of settings with different health organisations. Students will develop their skills and knowledge through a combination of theoretical and extensive clinical learning experiences including simulated training across the University’s nationally located Clinical Learning Centres. The Clinical Learning Centres are designed to simulate a real-world setting for students to safely practice in. Through this course students will acquire skills to provide person-centered care and collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Students will seek evidence to ensure safe quality practice and act in a professional, ethical and compassionate manner. In addition, students will learn to nurture the development of nursing as a practice discipline and demonstrate leadership in healthcare. Note

Clinical learning is a key element of the Bachelor of Nursing (Enrolled Nurse Pathway) and students will be required to undertake a minimum of 680 hours of professional experience placement in a variety of settings with different health organisations. In alignment with healthcare facilities, students must meet specific mandatory health, safety and security requirements to be eligible to attend each professional experience placement. Mandatory Checks for these requirements may take several months to complete. To avoid disappointment and ensure your readiness for placement, please commence your checks by visiting CQUniversity’s Clinical Placement Information. Professional experience placements may be limited in specific locations. This means that students may be placed in other locations and may be required to relocate to complete placements.

It is strongly recommended to validate your mandatory checks as soon as possible as clinical placement will likely be at the beginning of your study.

Additional entry requirements

To be considered for this course, all applicants must hold a completed Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) equivalent Diploma of Nursing qualification (HLT51612, HLT54115 or HLT54121), which has been completed within the last 7 years as of the Term commencement date and hold current Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration as an Enrolled Nurse (Division 2).

In addition to this, all applicants must meet the English Language Proficiency requirements, which include attended and satisfactorily completed at least 6 years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed solely in English. At least two years of this education must have been between grades 7 and 12. This education must have been completed in one of the following countries; Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America. If students do not meet these educational requirements, they will be required to provide evidence of an acceptable English Language test. For more information see English Language Proficiency.

Career opportunities

In the final year of the course, students usually apply for a new graduate nursing position in a hospital and health service or other healthcare organisation where they will have the opportunity to further consolidate their knowledge and skills in nursing. The broad nature of nursing and healthcare allows opportunities for employment and/or specialisation in environments such as acute hospital services, community health, mental health, residential and aged care, Indigenous health, and rural and remote health.
