Course outline

This course prepares graduates for a career in teaching and related fields. It examines learners and learning theories, curriculum studies and approaches to primary teaching and assessment. Students undertake practical work in schools and a variety of other educational sites in rural and remote locations from the first year of study. The course has a special focus on education for sustainability and improving outcomes for Indigenous students. Specialisations include: English/literacy; mathematics/numeracy; science; or health and physical education. Not all specialisations are available at all campuses. This course is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Note

All education students must participate in a three-day intensive Professional Orientation Program on campus in the final year of their program. Online education students can study six subjects consecutively per year (one eight-week subject at a time for six study periods a year) with the exception of professional experience placement in Australian Educational Institutions as required for professional accreditation.

Other requirements

A Queensland Working with Children Card (Blue Card) is required; refer to institution. All students must meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) standard prior to their final placement and Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA). Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the minimum English language requirements; refer to institution.

Prerequisites

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, C); Completion of Year 12 or attained age 18 years

Additional entry requirements

All applicants for initial teacher education courses must satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria. QTAC assesses applicants’ non-academic capabilities.
Students must meet English language proficiency requirements for teacher registration in Australia, either on entry to or on graduation from the program.
