Course outline

Gain the knowledge and skills to teach in early childhood, primary, or secondary school environments. Studying education at Griffith, you will develop strategies and resources to prepare you to teach learners from diverse academic and personal backgrounds. Throughout your study, you will hone your curriculum planning skills, and build your confidence to design, deliver and evaluate lessons to ensure you graduate as an experienced and capable educator.
Our primary education curriculum covers areas such as history and geography, the way language develops and works, mathematics, science and technology, health and physical education, and the arts. You can also choose to specialise in early childhood education, health and physical education, special needs education, English, mathematics or science.
Studying secondary education, you’ll learn the knowledge and skills to teach students through years 7 to 12 and can choose to undertake studies in two teaching areas, or one teaching area and the Learning Support major (conditions apply to some teaching area combinations).
Benefit from our strong relationships with schools and industry partners, as well as international experiences, if you choose. During your studies, you will undertake 80 days of supervised professional experience, and we have a dedicated placement officer to assist in organising your placement.

Note

Students study over three trimesters each year, with the option to complete the program in 3.5 years. Students from any campus can travel between campuses to undertake their selected major or minors. All courses in the Primary Health and Physical Education major except 4082EDN Specialist Planning in Health and Physical Education are also offered online.

Griffith offers a number of admission pathways to your preferred degree. If you don’t meet the minimum ATAR/selection rank for this degree, you may automatically be considered for a place in the Diploma of Education/Bachelor of Education (prerequisites apply). This means you may receive an offer into the Bachelor of Education which is conditional on successful completion of the Diploma of Education at Griffith University. Upon successful completion of the Diploma of Education you will be transferred into the second year of the Bachelor of Education program. Visit Undergraduate Diplomas for more information.

Other requirements

A Suitability Card is required; refer to institution. Students undertaking an initial teacher education program will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) to graduate from the program. Students are permitted three test attempts in total for each component. If students fail three test attempts for each component, they will not be able to graduate.

Prerequisites

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, C); Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements for admission, see the QTAC website for details.

Additional entry requirements

Secondary education: It is recommended that students select teaching areas that they have successfully studied in their senior schooling. In particular, for the mathematics teaching area – Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics and for chemistry, physics or biology teaching areas – Chemistry, Physics or Biology respectively.

English Language Proficiency requirements: Apply to all applicants whose previous studies were completed in a country other than Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom or the United States of America or undertaken in a language other than English. Applicants must attain an IELTS – academic (or equivalent) of 7.5 overall (with a minimum score of 8 in speaking and listening, and minimum score of 7 in each of the other subtests), obtained within two years prior to the start of the program, or the successful completion of one year of full-time bachelor level study where the language of instruction is English completed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, UK or USA.

Previous Education studies: Successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is not an entry requirement for this program. However, if you have achieved a ‘satisfactory’ result for one or more component of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the ‘satisfactory’ result can be carried across with your program application. You are not eligible to apply for a place in the program if one or more components of LANTITE remains at ‘unsatisfactory’ after two test attempts for that component.
