Course outline

Students obtain project management, airline and airport operations, international aviation law and safety management systems knowledge required for the aviation industry. The flight operations major allows students to undertake flight training within the degree requirements. This program includes professional development workshops where students can develop employability skills, deepen their understanding of aviation professional culture, and gain industry insight from aviation experts. Graduates in the flight operations major obtain the flying skills and knowledge to meet the Civil Aviation Safety Authority requirements of the Australian Commercial Pilot Licence. Note

Students undertake their flight training with a flight school that is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), offering the applicable VET diploma:
Diploma of Aviation (commercial Pilot Licence – Aeroplane or Helicopter). Eligible students may be able to access VET Student Loans.

Other requirements

While this is not an admission requirement to the program, students planning to undertake the Flight Operations Major will have to hold a Class 1 Medical Certificate issued by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority, as this is one of the regulatory requirements to hold a Commercial Pilot Licence. It is highly recommended that students investigate their ability to hold an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC) and/or pass all required security checks as some organisations such as airports require employees to satisfy security clearances as a condition of employment. Appropriate advice will be provided to students during their first academic year.

Career opportunities

Graduates from the Flight Operations major are qualified to enter the aviation industry as a commercial pilot. Subject to additional flying experience, graduates will find employment opportunities in airlines, general aviation (e.g., charter and flight instruction), or in other supporting roles.
