Undergraduate diplomas provide a supported start to your university studies and help you to transition to your chosen bachelor degree. Once you’ve successfully completed the diploma, you’ll be offered guaranteed entry into the second year of the corresponding bachelor degree. To be eligible for admission to Griffith University, you need to satisfy any admission requirements for a program of study. In Queensland the admission score for a program is expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) score or selection rank. There can be additional admission requirements or selection criteria for programs including:
- English language proficiency – meeting a minimum standard of English language competency.
- Minimum age – minimum age requirements for applicants at the time they would commence their studies.
- Subject prerequisites – completion of compulsory subject matter.
- Special selection criteria – performance in an audition, submission of a portfolio, level of attainment in a specialised test, interview or questionnaire.
Subject prerequisites and assumed knowledge
ENGLISH
Most Griffith undergraduate degrees require Essential English which is an Applied subject to meet the English subject prerequisite. For these programs, the admission requirements will state ‘Any General or Applied English (Units 3 & 4, C)’. Some degrees still require a General English and the admission criteria for these programs will state ‘English, English as an Additional Language, Literature or English & Literature Extension (Units 3 & 4, C)’. These programs include Education, Nursing, Laws (Honours) and some Health programs. Some programs, such as Information Technology, Acting, Music, Musical Theatre, Animation, Film and Screen Media Production, Visual Art, Design and Contemporary Australian Indigenous Art, have English as Assumed Knowledge.
MATHEMATICS
A range of Griffith programs have mathematics as Assumed Knowledge. This is indicated in the admission criteria. Recent changes include Engineering (Honours) and the new Software Engineering (Honours).

Griffith Guaranteed Admission Scheme
These schemes provide certainty about future study options and more opportunities for students from a range of backgrounds, to offer applicants with an ATAR 90+/IB 33+, or ATAR 80+/IB 28+ and for those who have completed a VET Certificate III or above a guarantee to meet rank for a range of programs. The Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee scheme allows offers to be made to eligible current Queensland and northern New South Wales students based on their Senior Internal Assessment results and/or VET qualifications (III or IV). To find out more, visit Year 12 Early Offer Guarantee.
Our TAFE Admission Scheme allows mature graduates of an Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Advanced Diploma or Diploma completed at an Australian TAFE institution, the ability to apply for direct admission into a range of programs. You may also be eligible to apply for credit transfer, which may reduce the time it will take to complete your degree. Use our Credit Precedent Database to find out how a qualification from TAFE could translate to credit transfer for your Griffith studies.

If you have completed a bachelor degree or higher, you will be assigned a selection rank based on the level and duration of the study and the Grade Point Average (GPA) you have achieved.
Successfully completing a minimum of two single tertiary education courses (subjects) meets the Griffith University English subject prerequisite. It doesn’t matter which two courses have been completed. Successful completion of two or more courses can also provide you with a new selection rank. If you have a number of different qualifications for which selection ranks can be assigned, normally the highest rank will be used for admission.
Credit and recognition of prior learning
Griffith provides credit if you can demonstrate that you have already achieved the learning required for components of a program of study. Griffith may grant credit for:
- Formal study that takes place through a structured program of learning and leads to the full or partial achievement of an officially accredited qualification. Examples include study undertaken with other Australian higher education providers, study undertaken at a Vocational Education and Training (VET) provider including TAFE and private colleges, study at overseas institutions, or credentialed programs provided by recognised professional bodies, employers and other authorities.
- Non-formal learning that takes place through a structured program of learning but does not lead to an officially accredited qualification. Examples include learning and training activities undertaken in the workplace, voluntary sector or in community-based settings.
- Informal learning gained through work, social, family, hobby or leisure activities and experience. Informal learning is not organised or externally structured in terms of objectives, time or learning support.
- Pathways with credit that are agreed and approved with other institutions via an articulation agreement. Examples include Griffith College and TAFE.
- You can apply for credit transfer once you have been admitted and this may reduce the time required to complete the program of study. Visit credit transfer for more information.
Griffith University accepts a number of bridging and enabling courses completed at one of the registered higher education providers across Australia for admission. Contact Griffith University for more information.
If you have completed an AQF Certificate III, Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma, you are eligible for guaranteed admission to many of Griffith’s programs. You will still need to meet Subject Prerequisites and any other admission requirements as outlined in the Griffith Degree Finder or visit Guaranteed Admission Scheme.
For admission to other programs not listed in the VET Guarantee, your completed AQF Certificates III and IV, AQF Diplomas and sub-degree level study will be assessed based on level, duration, Grade Point Average (GPA) and assigned a selection rank. Mature applicants with a completed TAFE Diploma or Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation (CATP) can also apply directly to Griffith for a range of programs; visit VET Pathways to Griffith for more information.
Griffith College offers a range of diploma programs to prepare students for a smooth transition into a full program of study at Griffith University. If you complete a Griffith College diploma, you can apply directly to the University to study the related Griffith University bachelor program. Visit Griffith College Pathways.
If you have several selection ranks (e.g. based on year 12 results, VET study, higher education study, employment), you will generally be considered on the highest rank.
You are also required to meet relevant subject prerequisites for the course you are applying for. These can be satisfied by successfully completing Senior secondary subjects (or equivalent). Subject prerequisites generally cannot be met through certificate-level study.
You must also satisfy any additional admission requirements.

Year 12 results (ATAR/selection rank) do not expire once you have left school. Whether this result is considered for an offer to a course will depend on whether you have additional qualifications (including other recognised qualifications completed while at school or post school).
This includes formal qualifications such as Senior External Examination results, higher education study (e.g. bachelor degree level and higher), VET study such as competency-based and graded AQF certificates III and IV (completed), diplomas and sub-degree level study and bridging and preparation courses. Other post-secondary professional and paraprofessional qualifications (including some creative arts, language and civil aviation qualifications, memberships of professional associations for which qualifying exams are undertaken and police, emergency defence force service will be also considered.
Griffith University will also consider you for admission if you have:
- Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) and employment experience; applicants must be 18 or older to use STAT. Some program exemptions apply; refer to STAT and employment experience.
- bridging or enabling courses completed at one of the registered higher education providers across Australia
- successful completion of the Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation from Queensland TAFE. Students may undertake specific modules to meet subject prerequisite requirements. A minimum rank is available for two or more successfully completed modules.
- Australian Music Examination Board (AMEB) qualifications
Griffith Personal Statement
If you are a mature applicant, the Griffith Personal Statement offers you an admission pathway into a range of undergraduate programs if you do not meet the required minimum selection rank and/or English subject prerequisite for admission. This scheme is not for current Year 12 students, however they may be eligible to be considered via the Personal Statement for the July intake, the year following completion of year 12. Applicants who are offered a place at Griffith via this pathway will also be eligible to receive three of our Griffith Credentials (21st Century Skills).

If you are a current Year 12 student applying to Griffith, you will be considered for admission on the basis of merit (expressed as an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)) and whether you meet the admission criteria (such as subject prerequisites).
If you are a current Queensland or interstate Year 12 student who does not qualify for an ATAR, you may be considered on the basis of a completed vocational education and training (VET) qualification such as Certificate III or above, as Griffith University accepts standalone VET completed at school for Year 12s to meet rank. You must also meet any subject prerequisites for admission and any other selection criteria. A completed AQF diploma will meet English subject prerequisites. If you are a current International Baccalaureate (IB) student applying to Griffith, you are assigned a selection rank based on your completed IB Diploma. This selection rank is expressed on the same scale as the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank).
Griffith University recognises that some IB students will experience circumstances that prevents them from being awarded the Diploma and offers an IB Safety Net. This means that if for some reason you do not complete your IB Diploma you will be able to apply to QTAC for a place at Griffith and be assessed based on the study that you have completed. You don’t need to apply separately for the Safety Net, as you will automatically be considered when you apply to QTAC. Any eligible adjustments will also be applied to your rank. Current Year 12 students in Queensland and northern New South Wales undertaking the Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IBD) or the Higher School Certificate (HSC) may also be considered for an early offer into selected programs based on their Senior Internal Assessment results and/or VET qualifications (AQF Certificate III or IV). Results from home schooling, Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) and other non-standard Year 12 programs (with SAT tests) may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for an offer based on this selection rank (or other recognised qualifications undertaken while at school). Applicants with Overseas Year 12 Study
Griffith University will consider equivalent overseas Year 12 qualifications for admission purposes. Contact Griffith for more information. If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.
Other Qualifications Completed in Year 12
If you have completed other recognised qualifications while still at school, these may also be assigned a selection rank and considered for admission to Griffith. Examples include Australian Music Examination Board qualifications.

Year 12 Subject Adjustment Scheme: recognises that some subjects undertaken by current high school students require a high level of skill and knowledge as preparation for university study. If you complete selected Year 12 subjects you may be eligible for a maximum adjustment of six (6.00) ranks when applying for study at Griffith in the year following the successful completion of Year 12. Gold Coast and Logan Campus Priority Access: if you are living in the Gold Coast and Logan campus catchment areas and have not previously attempted university study, you may be eligible for an adjustment of two (2.00) ranks towards your selection rank when applying for programs offered at the Gold Coast or Logan campuses. Program exclusions apply.
Nathan, Mt Gravatt and South Bank Community Engagement: if you are new to tertiary study and a resident of the Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, or Redlands area, you may be eligible for two (2.00) location adjustments when applying for programs at the Nathan, Mt Gravatt or South Bank campuses. Program exclusions apply.
Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Study (GUESTS): if you are a Queensland or NSW Year 11 or 12 student completing an ATAR, IB Diploma, or a VET pathway, you may apply to complete a maximum of two undergraduate subjects while still studying at high school. Only one subject may be undertaken per trimester. On successful completion you will be eligible for two (2.00) adjustment factors towards your selection rank for each university course to a maximum of four (4.00) adjustment ranks. Educational Access Scheme (EAS): if you have experienced difficulties that have negatively impacted your studies, you may be eligible for adjustments to your selection rank that are used to recognise the impact of financial, health-related or social disadvantage. In some programs at Griffith, selection for admission can be based on special criteria in addition to, or in combination with, or instead of standard admission requirements. Special criteria may include:
- performance in an audition
- presentation of a folio of creative work
- level of attainment in specialised tests or questionnaires
- responses in an interview
- demonstrated achievement of specified vocational or professional standards

Scholarships
Each year, Griffith and its education and industry partners provide more than $40 million in direct financial support to assist new and continuing students successfully complete their program of study. Trimesters
Griffith teaches across three 12-week trimesters, offering students increased flexibility. Depending on your program, you may be able to accelerate your study and get a head start on your career. Alternatively, you can spread your study load to better balance study with your other commitments such as work or child-care. Not every program is available in Trimester 3.
First Peoples
Situated on each campus, the GUMURRII Student Success Unit offers a safe and culturally supportive learning environment for Australia First Peoples students, from orientation through to graduation and postgraduate studies.
Inherent Academic Requirements
In the academic context, inherent requirements are the essential components of a program or course that demonstrate the abilities, knowledge and skills required to achieve the core learning outcomes of the course or unit, while preserving the academic integrity of the University’s learning, assessment and academic accreditation processes. English Language Proficiency
You must be able to demonstrate your English language proficiency i.e. the capacity to speak, write, read and comprehend English to a specified standard. Offers
If you apply via QTAC, you will be sent your offer to Griffith University by email and you must respond to the offer online by the due date. You will also receive a Starting@Griffith offer email. Once you accept your offer and enrolment is open you will be able to enrol via a link in your Starting@Griffith offer email.
Acceptances, lapsing of offers
If you receive an offer from Griffith University but do not notify us of your acceptance by the date in the offer letter, your offer may lapse. For most programs you will be able to reactive your offer by contacting QTAC. If you receive an offer for a high demand or quota managed program you must respond to QTAC and enrol at Griffith University within the short timeframe (irrespective of whether you accept unconditionally or conditionally) as specified in you offer letter and Starting@Griffith email, or your offer will lapse. Applicants must apply to have an offer reinstated by contacting Griffith Admissions, however reinstatement is not automatic and some programs may not be reinstated. Deferment
You can accept an offer from Griffith and defer your enrolment for a period of time, usually twelve months. This option is not available to all programs. If you wish to defer you should not enrol or pay any fees. If your program allows for deferment and you want to defer please respond to your QTAC offer accordingly. If you decide to defer after accepting your offer, you should contact Griffith as soon as possible. To check whether a program allows for deferment, visit the Degree Finder. If you are unable to commence your studies and your program does not allow for deferment, then you will be required to reapply for a future intake.
