2019 PD Workshops for Educational Professionals
After an overwhelmingly positive response and some great feedback to this year’s New to QTAC and QTAC Refresher workshops, we have made some improvements and here are the 2019 PD offerings:
Back 2 Basics Workshop
Are you new to QTAC or new to higher education? This is the workshop for you. The Back 2 Basics Workshop has been created for professionals new to the industry and/or QTAC. It provides an introduction to all things QTAC related, including:
- History and context of QTAC, its functions and activities
- The QTAC application process – how to maximise preferencing
- The assessment process, EAS and adjustment schemes
- How to change preferences, how to navigate offer options
- Tertiary prerequisites
- The ATAR and its implementation alongside the new Queensland QCE curriculum
These topics are presented in a practical context and with a comprehensive takehome pack to enable participants to refresh knowledge back in the workplace.
Attendees have the opportunity to meet, upskill and network with other education professionals and QTAC industry experts in a relaxed and informative environment at QTAC's new offices in Milton.

This workshop has been designed specifically for careers advisors and education professionals are familiar with the basics of QTAC and who are working with students intending to progress into tertiary study. It provides broad industry insights into the following areas:
- current tertiary education industry trends, transparency and higher education drivers
- analysis of year on year application data, statistics and patterns
- updates on the ATAR implementation process and 2019 developments in real time
- current QTAC schedules and practical tips for application and use
- 2021 tertiary prerequisite discussion and practical examples
- an introduction to university and VET widening participation opportunities.
These topics are presented in a practical context and with a comprehensive take-home pack to enable participants to guide students through tertiary study choices with confidence.
Attendees have the opportunity to meet, upskill and network with other career education professionals and QTAC industry experts in a relaxed and informative environment.

Next year, for the first time, we are also offering specialty masterclasses in three key areas: Higher Education Sector Insights, Widening Participation Opportunities and Unpacking the ATAR.
Masterclasses are a shorter, more intensive option for the education professional wanting to upskill in a specific knowledge area. They are 3 hours in duration and are limited to 15 participants in a boardroom setting, enabling an interactive learning and discussion experience with QTAC industry experts.
Higher Education Sector Insights Masterclass
This Masterclass has been designed for education professionals seeking to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the higher education sector in Australia. The masterclass will discuss the economic, political, social and international drivers which have determined policy decisions and shaped how higher education institutions function, decide course offerings, set price points and entry requirements. It will also include an analysis of the challenges facing higher education in Queensland and nationally in the next five years.
Attendees for the HESI Masterclass should have a general understanding of the higher education sector and its overall structure and purpose.
Widening Participation Masterclass
This Masterclass has been designed for education professionals wanting to learn more about the philosophy of widening participation in Australian higher education. Attendees will discuss the historical context, Dawkins and Bradley reforms, current Rudd/Gillard targets and the development of equity categories for students. Attendees will engage in practical examples of adjustment scheme allocations managed by QTAC such as EAS, how schemes like HECS provides equity performance indicators and how students can maximise adjustment factors when applying for further study.
Attendees for the Widening Participation Masterclass do not need any prior knowledge of the topic.

2019 School Presentations
Registrations are open for 2019 school presentations. Next year, we will be offering ATAR presentations for Year 10 students and parents and How to Apply presentations for Year 12 students. Presentations can be scheduled during school hours, or in the evening so parents can attend.
For Year 12 How to Apply presentations, topics can be tailored to your school's needs, but generally include:
- how to apply through QTAC
- entry requirements
- ordering preferences
- important dates and deadlines
- EAS scheme
- adjustment factors.
