Course outline

This course is the essential minimum requirement to register as an enrolled nurse. This course will provide students with the advanced skills to perform clinical assessments, contribute to nursing care of people with complex needs, administer and monitor medications and IV therapy, research and apply evidence to practice. TAFE Queensland’s highly-experienced industry professionals will guide students every step of the way to ensure a smooth transition into the health sector. Successful completion of this course will qualify graduates to seek registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. Upon successful registration graduates may find work as an Enrolled Nurse within a diverse range of healthcare settings.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to make early contact with the relevant campus regarding on campus attendance and clinical placement requirements. While TAFE Queensland will make every effort to minimise disruption to study, the current COVID-19 pandemic situation and subsequent restriction of access to some health care facilities during this time, may cause delays with vocational placement and completion of this course. Students will need to provide evidence of full COVID-19 vaccination to attend the mandatory vocational placement assessment components of this course. The vaccines received must be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use in Australia or endorsed by the WHO-COVAX if vaccinated overseas.. Other requirements

Prior to commencing vocational placement, students may be required to satisfy requirements relating to mandatory mask use and fit testing, criminal history check, Suitability Card, vaccinations, and Senior First Aid certificate.

Additional entry requirements

To practice safely in Australia, health practitioners, including nurses, must have strong English language skills. This includes being able to communicate effectively with patients and their relatives, collaborate with other health care professionals and keep clear and accurate health records. The English language skills registration standard is one of the five core standards required under National Law. In preparation for registration, and required by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, all new applicants to study the Diploma of Nursing at TAFE Queensland are to demonstrate English language proficiency, as well as literacy and numeracy skills prior to enrolment. Successful applicants will be required to complete the Basic Key Skills Builder (bksb) assessment and attain competence at or above Exit Level 3 in the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) in both reading and numeracy before enrolment can be finalised. This is a requirement in accordance with TAFE Queensland and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). The bksb is a Commonwealth approved literacy and numeracy online assessment tool. Kingaroy (566775), Warwick (570775), Roma (565775) and Toowoomba (568775): for these campuses, preference is given to applicants who reside in these regions. Successful applicants must undertake a clinical placement; students will be notified of locations after commencement of study.
