Course outline

This is a two-year teacher preparation program for students who already hold a tertiary degree which maps to two secondary school curriculum teaching areas, and who aspire to be teachers. Through an integration of theory and urban, rural and remote practical placements, this course prepares graduates to teach two subject specialisations to year 12 in secondary schools, and become competent, critically engaged and caring teachers. Curriculum study areas include English, mathematics, sciences, information and communication technology (ICT), humanities and social sciences, visual art, health and physical education, business, and languages other than English (LOTE). Students must attend prescribed professional placements in secondary schools during the course. This course is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Other requirements

A Queensland Working with Children Card (Blue Card) is required; refer to institution. All students must meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) standard prior to their final placement and Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA). Refer to https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au. Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the minimum English language requirements; refer to institution.

Additional entry requirements

Successful completion of an appropriate bachelor degree from an approved tertiary institution which includes the completion of subjects in two teaching areas appropriate to curriculum areas in Australian secondary schools ie subjects that link to the national school curriculum (Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA)) and/or the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA). Applicants must nominate two teaching areas in preferred order on their QTAC application. Available teaching areas are: English; Mathematics; History; Geography; Biology; Chemistry; Physics; Information Communication Technologies; French; Japanese; Legal Studies; Economics; Business; Health and Physical Education; Music; Visual Arts. All applicants must also satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria. Applicants’ non-academic capabilities will be assessed by QTAC.
