Course outline

This is a two-year teacher preparation program for students who already hold a tertiary degree. This course focuses on foundational studies in education and pedagogy and studies relevant to the primary school curriculum with an emphasis on literacy/English language and numeracy. Curriculum study areas include the arts, English, geography, health and physical education, history, ICT, mathematics, and science. Students must attend prescribed professional placements in primary schools during the course. This course is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). The JCU Offer Guarantee does not apply to this course.

Note

External students must attend a 3-day intensive induction course at the Townsville or Cairns campus.

Other requirements

A Queensland Working with Children Card (Blue Card) is required; refer to institution. All students must meet the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) standard prior to their final placement and Graduate Teacher Performance Assessment (GTPA). Refer to https://teacheredtest.acer.edu.au. Applicants from non-English speaking backgrounds must meet the minimum English language requirements; refer to institution.

Prerequisites

Completion of Year 12 or attained age 18 years; LANTITE Literacy status; LANTITE Numeracy status; Prior study; Prior study in a particular field of education; Teaching Personal Statement

Additional entry requirements

Successful completion of an appropriate bachelor degree from an approved tertiary institution which includes the equivalent of at least one full year of study in areas appropriate to the curriculum demands of primary teaching in Australian schools. All applicants must also satisfy both academic and non-academic entry criteria. Applicants’ non-academic capabilities will be assessed by QTAC.
