Course outline

In this new and integrated vertical degree, you will gain a thorough grounding in the application of clinical, development, biological, cognitive, social and organisational psychology. You will then build on this broad knowledge base with studies in the specialist area of rehabilitation counselling. To acquire the advanced knowledge and skills to work as a rehabilitation counsellor, you will learn about vocational evaluation, job placement, injury management, disability studies, applied counselling and research methods. You will put this all into practice through a supervised practicum placement in a rehabilitation counselling setting. Note

Bachelor of Psychological Science courses are conducted at the Gold Coast and Mt Gravatt and Master of Rehabilitation courses are conducted online (with in-field professional placement).

Career opportunities

Bachelor of Psychological Science: You will be prepared for a career in counselling, guidance, health management, social research, rehabilitation and other related fields including health and organisational workplaces. You may also be eligible for entry into a wide range of postgraduate degrees in areas such as social work, speech pathology, teacher preparation, forensic mental health, criminology and criminal justice. You will need to complete further study to work as a registered psychologist.
Master of Rehabilitation Counselling: You will be prepared to work as an accredited rehabilitation counsellor in government, insurance, workers compensation and motor accident rehabilitation, disability employment services, the National Injury Insurance Scheme (NIIS), the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) (or equivalent internationally), and private and not-for-profit rehabilitation services providing vocational assessment, counselling, case management, life skills training and social support for clients with disability, injury and vocational disadvantage.

Membership

As a Bachelor of Psychological Science graduate, you will be eligible for affiliate membership of the Australian Psychological Society. Master of Rehabilitation Counselling graduates will be eligible to apply for membership with the Australian Society of Rehabilitation Counsellors (ASORC) and the Rehabilitation Counselling Association of Australasia (RCAA) subject to meeting any additional requirements that may be stipulated by ASORC or RCAA.
