Course outline

Fully accredited by the Council of Ambulance Authorities, this course qualifies students as a paramedic. Students learn from experienced lecturers and build their capability in emergency treatment and paramedic care through exceptional learning experiences. These experiences include practical laboratory exercises, high-fidelity simulations, case-based learning, and enhanced work-integrated learning opportunities. Students complete three clinical placements, totalling a minimum of 600 hours of clinical experience. Students can enjoy the flexibility to study this course online or on campus. Online students will complete residential schools on campus in Cairns, Rockhampton or Townsville, while on-campus students will study on campus in Rockhampton. Students develop foundation knowledge in sciences, human body systems, study and research skills and paramedic practice. Study focuses on disease processes and emergency treatment, and includes practical placements in paramedic care, enabling students to graduate work ready and highly sought after by employers. For more course information, visit Bachelor of Paramedic Science.

Note

This course has strict enrolment requirements. Successful applicants must accept the offer and enrol in units with CQU by the date stated on the offer letter. If you fail to do so, or if you withdraw from your units within this course, your offer will be revoked. This requirement applies irrespective of whether you accepted conditionally or unconditionally in your QTAC application.

Other requirements

Throughout this course, students are required to undertake a minimum of 15 weeks (600 hours) of compulsory off-campus clinical placements with a state or territory ambulance service. Students will be required to meet security and health requirements prior to undertaking clinical placements. Mandatory health requirements include a medical assessment process, immunisation and vaccination evidence (and serology where required) for the following diseases: Hepatitis B, Measles, Mumps and Rubella, Varicella, Pertussis, Influenza, and Tuberculosis screening. Quantitative Respirator mask fit testing is also an annual requirement for this course. Effective 25 September 2023, updates have been made to the COVID-19 vaccination mandate for Queensland Health sites and the Queensland Ambulance Service. While Queensland Health does not currently mandate evidence of COVID-19 vaccination, it’s essential to recognise that other organisations may enforce their own vaccination specific criteria. This situation is similar across other states and territories, with the exception of Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia, where COVID-19 vaccination is mandatory for all healthcare students. For full course requirements, visit Bachelor of Paramedic Science.
