Student profile

Student profile

In Course Search, the student profile is a snapshot of data about all students who commenced undergraduate study in the most recent semester one intake, including applicants offered in all offer rounds across all campuses and international students.

A student profile is provided for the institution as a whole as well as for each undergraduate course at the institution, and shows the number of students admitted to the institution/course, along with their life and education experiences.

Domestic students are categorised broadly in four categories:

A. Higher education study

These are applicants whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a higher education course. They include applicants who:

  • studied at a university or non-university higher education provider either recently or some time ago
  • transferred from another institution or changed programs at an institution
  • completed bridging or enabling studies.

B. Vocational Education and Training (VET)

These are applicants whose highest level of study since leaving secondary education is a VET course. This includes study at a TAFE or private VET providers, whether the qualification was completed or not.

VET students may have other qualifications, such as a Year 10 Certificate or Year 12 Certificate.

C. Work and life experience

These are applicants who left secondary education more than two years ago and haven't undertaken VET or higher education study since then.
'Experience' can include a range of factors, such as:

  • paid work experience
  • professional awards or service
  • aptitude tests.

Applicants may have also completed non-formal programs that helped them prepare for tertiary study or were relevant to their course.

D. Recent secondary education

These are applicants whose admission is based mostly on secondary education completed in the current year or previous two years.
Secondary education may have been undertaken at a:

  • school
  • TAFE, or
  • other VET or higher education provider.

For example, 'Recent secondary education' students who commenced in 2018 include those who completed secondary education in 2017, 2016 and 2015.

This group also includes students who may have undertaken or completed some VET or higher education study while still at school, and applicants whose secondary education was undertaken interstate or overseas.

For students admitted based on recent secondary study, further information is provided on how many:

  • were admitted solely on their OP/selection rank
  • were admitted on OP/selection rank plus other criteria (e.g audition, portfolio); and
  • received an offer solely on other criteria (instead of their OP/selection rank (e.g special consideration, audition alone)

Note: Student profiles show the likely peer group in a course. They are not the basis for admission to a course.
