Special Tertiary Admissions Test

Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a two-hour aptitude test that demonstrates your capability of undertaking future tertiary study. The test results help institutions decide which applicants to consider for their courses.

The test has several versions but for entry to Queensland institutions, we use the STAT Multiple Choice. This version has 70 multiple-choice questions, half verbal (like English and English comprehension) and half quantitative (like maths and science). The questions focus on your ability to process, analyse and understand information presented in different ways, like graphs, tables, diagrams, poems and cartoons.

We usually only use your STAT result if it increases your chances of getting into a course but this might not always be the case if you have already studied at a tertiary level and didn't do very well.

Important note: STAT on its own or used as described below is generally not acceptable for current Year 12s.

STAT information booklet

The STAT Candidate Information Booklet is free to download from the ACER website.

If you are unable to access the Candidate Information Booklet online call us on 1300 467 822 for information.

Dates and venues

Before you book a STAT, be aware that institutions have different policies on how they use STAT. Check the table below for information about institution policies. We have STAT sittings at our office in South Brisbane and other Queensland venues throughout the year.

Important notes:

  • Select a sitting well before the major offer round for your QTAC preferences. We can't guarantee your STAT results will be available in time if gets too close to an offer round.
  • You can only sit the test once per STAT year. The current STAT year is 1 June 2016 to 14 April 2017.
  • If you sit for the test in different STAT years, we usually use your highest result when we assess your QTAC application but as above, this might not always be the case if you have already studied at a tertiary level and didn't do very well.

2016 - 2017 STAT dates - QTAC, South Brisbane

Check back here from mid-July for sittings STAT sittings throughout 2016 and 2017 or follow QTAC on Facebook for updates.

2016 - 2017 STAT dates - Regional

Check back here from mid-July for sittings STAT sittings throughout 2016 and 2017 or follow QTAC on Facebook for updates.

If you can't attend any of the dates listed here you can organise an individual STAT sitting at an agreed venue, but you have to arrange your own experienced supervisor and pay any associated costs. We need at least two weeks' notice of the exam date. Contact us for more information about booking a special STAT sitting.

Costs

If you sit the STAT 15 April 2016 to 14 April 2017 the fee is $153. From 15 April 2017 it is $160. You must pay this by credit card or debit card.

You can change the date, time or venue of your STAT after booking for a fee of $43.

You can purchase a copy of past STAT results for a fee of $61. However, if you are lodging a new QTAC application we will add your results to it so you do not need to pay this. Just tell us at the relevant question on the application when and where you sat it.

Find out about QTAC's refund policy.

Preparation

The STAT is a type of test that you can't really study for. The best way to prepare is to go through sample questions.

Find STAT sample questions on the ACER website. (If you can't access or download the online information booklet, contact us for more information.)

Results

You will receive a written statement with your results two to three weeks after you sit the test. They will also be uploaded to the national database.

Your results will be attached to your application if you are a QTAC applicant.

Important note: Because it takes two to three weeks for your results to come back, make sure you choose a STAT sitting date that allows enough time to have results available for offer rounds.

Change test date

If you have booked and paid for your STAT sitting but now wish to sit at another venue or different time, you'll need to pay a Change of STAT fee. You can change your sitting yourself by logging into your Eventbrite account or by clicking your account log in at the bottom of the original Order Notification email. Then go to tickets and select manage order.

Important note: if you don't advise us before your sitting date that you want to change the venue/time you have to pay another STAT fee unless there are extenuating circumstances.

  • If you can't attend your STAT sitting because you're sick or involved in a car accident on the way to the test or because an immediate family member has died, we can offer you an alternative date but you must supply supporting documentation like a medical certificate, police incident report or death notice within 7 business days after the date of your STAT sitting.

Alternative pathways

It's a good idea to sit the STAT if you don't have any formal academic qualifications and want to try and get into a course by using alternative pathways like employment experience. A STAT result can give you a selection rank on its own or combined with your employment experience, depending on institution policies.

Even if you have studied before, if you didn't do very well, these alternative pathways might help you get into your course. Find out more about Alternative pathways.

Combining STAT with formal qualifications

As a general guide a STAT result can combine with the following qualifications, but this depends on institution policies which includes, for some institutions, minimum age requirements.

Subject prerequisites and English language proficiency

For some institutions, you can use a STAT result to satisfy some course entry requirements like subject prerequisites and English language proficiency.

Find out more about minimum entry requirements.

Disability or medical condition assistance

If you need assistance to sit the STAT due to a disability or medical condition, you should tell us this when you register. You need to give us a statement outlining your needs and attach medical evidence if appropriate. The STAT co-ordinator will then contact you. We will make every effort to assist you if you let us know. If necessary we can arrange an individual sitting to accommodate your needs.
