The University of Queensland (UQ) is one of Australia’s leading teaching and research institutions. Established in 1909, UQ is the oldest and largest university in Queensland, a founding member of Australia’s prestigious Group of Eight (Go8) universities and consistently ranked as one of the best tertiary institutions in the Asia-Pacific region.
For generations UQ has produced graduates who have gone on to become
leaders in all areas of society and industry. The University has more than
181,000 alumni, including a Nobel Laureate, an Academy Award winner,
state premiers, and governor generals. It has been ranked one of the top 50
universities in the world for the past five years in a row, according to the
UK’s Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings. In 2009, it
was the only Queensland university, and one of only a handful of Australian
universities, appearing in the top 50 list.
The 2010 edition of The Good Universities Guide awarded UQ the maximum
five-star rating for student demand, student staff ratios, research grants,
and research intensity. The university offers purpose-built research facilities
and state-of-the-art teaching spaces, which foster a highly collaborative
approach to teaching and learning. With more than 40,000 students enrolled
in programs across its St Lucia, Ipswich, Herston, and Gatton campuses, the
on-campus lifestyle is arguably the best in Australia. UQ students enjoy a
diverse and fulfilling academic and social experience, choosing from a wide
range of sporting and recreational activities that encourage interaction outside
the classroom. UQ continues to attract the vast majority of the state’s highest
academic achievers.
