Jschool is a vocational journalism college in Brisbane. Established in 2001 by former University of Queensland head of journalism Professor John Henningham, Jschool prepares students for careers in the news media.
The only stand-alone journalism education institution in Australia, Jschool offers the
nationally-accredited Diploma of Journalism. This is a one-year course that develops students' reporting, news writing and research skills and broadens their contextual knowledge of government, history, law, ethics, and literature. All students undertake the same core course at the College's city location, with ready access to important news-making institutions in the CBD such as courts, council and parliament. The course includes internships at print or broadcast news organisations.
Jschool concentrates on print and multimedia journalism, publishing student stories in online newspaper Newsbytes (www.newsbytes.com.au). Graduates of Jschool are now working in media at national, metropolitan and regional levels. In 2010 a Jschool student was named 'Most outstanding journalism student' in the metropolitan division of the Queensland Media Awards (the Clarions).
Jschool has developed a reputation as a friendly and student-centred institution. Ratings from graduating students are consistently the highest in Australia, with students appreciating the College's small class sizes, applied focus and continuous feedback, as well as the development of practical skills and the opportunity to build impressive portfolios.
