Course outline: There are five options in this degree: psychology; criminology; general; behaviour management; or counselling. The psychology major forms an Australian Psychological Society accredited foundation degree directed towards a career in psychology. Areas of study include counselling, clinical, forensic, health, and community psychology. Outstanding students may continue on to an honours degree. The criminology major is a non-accredited course which provides an introduction to criminological theories. Students acquire techniques for analysing criminological issues. Studies include contemporary information on crime prevention, the theory and practice of punishment, criminal offenders, the police, courts and correctional institutions, criminal profiling, and crime and deviance issues. The course is also permitted with majors in both areas of the above specialisation. The general major is a non-accredited course which encompasses both criminology and psychology. Students choose 12 subjects from these fields. Electives may also be taken from the criminology or psychology areas. The behaviour management major is designed for professionals in the fields of education and disability. The focus is on teaching practical competencies in working with children, adolescents and adults who experience moderate to severe behaviour disorder. The program is designed for students wanting to upgrade their expertise in working with challenging behaviour. The counselling major is designed for mental health professionals such as psychologists, social workers, guidance officers, welfare workers, and teachers interested in developing expertise in the area of counselling. The focus is on providing students with practical competencies in working with both child and adult clients.
